As we all know by now Infinity Ward decided against dedicated servers, meaning players could not create their own private place for playing with clan/friends or host private dedicated servers. The matchmaking runs on a peer to peer hosting system (Yes this means lag/high ping/Disconnects). The news was not greeted kindly by the PC Gaming Community and was a devastating blow to the pirate community.
I feel Infinity Ward are right to make their game as less pirate friendly as possible but not at the expense of the paying customer who pay their wages, Always support software/games developers
This page is to explain in easy steps how to play Co-op Special Ops (two player scenario missions) privately over LAN (Local Area Network) or with a friend over the internet.
Things you will need:
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
- Co-op Files : http://www.multiupload.com/AU3V04HF7M (all files needed in one package including the Teknogods Loader).
- Tunngle, found here: http://www.tunngle.net/en/
What To Do Next:
- Download and install Tunngle. It will ask to reboot your PC after installation so reboot your PC.
- Start Tunngle, and create an account.
- Click on browser on the bottom left of the program to choose the type of game you want to play. Choose ‘Shooter’, and then choose MW2 from the list.
- Open your Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 directory.
- Unrar the coop.rar file downloaded from the link above, open the folder named "coop" and copy and paste the contents into your Call Of Duty Modern Warfare folder clicking "replace" when asked.
- Start TCSB.exe and hit refresh. You will now be able to see the servers hosted by other players in the Tunngle MW2 channel, simply hit "join" to join a host. If you are alone or if you want to play with your friend, host a server and tell your friend to join that. (You must be in the tunngle MW2 lobby for TCSB to find hosts).
- If you joined a host: after the game has loaded, On the main screen before you choose any game mode hit F12 to join the current hosts game.
- If you host a game: simply set up the game in two player special ops mode and wait for someone to join your game.

Testing?
Yes I tested this method a lot. I have had many game sessions that lasted hours with no lag and no problems.
The only thing that let me down from time to time was Tunngle, don't get me wrong Its a good program, However it is still in beta testing and the server can go down sometimes for short periods of time.
Possible Dedicated Server Mod In The Future?
Yes I'm 100% sure there will be private dedicated servers in the near future. There are many people working on making one currently, The PC Gaming Community is screaming out for one.
I will make another tutorial on how to use these dedicated servers when the information is available, so check back often.

No that is not possible... yet! The Teknogods loader 1.1 will run the game in a steamless environment, and its apparently going to be released sometime over the xmas holidays. It also supports PRIVATE DEDICATED SERVERS! finally we can all say screw you Infinity Ward.
And do you know it will be released? the loader
Yes. It is currently in development check it out here : http://teknogods.com/ The guy who runs the site did a radio interview and he says "we are trying to release it for xmas"(you can find a link to it on their forums)
these guys are professional software reverse engineers, so it will be done, just a matter of time.

Sorry if repost... downloaded 4.3 version and installation went well... still, when I try to host with tunngle, it tells me that I must be sign in with steam... don't know what to do from here.

i never knew that buying this game for the pc could cause a problem, but its good that you know how to fix it, but i have a 360 and this game. i made a hubpage on the pros and cons of the game, check it out and let me know what you think about it.

i got the invalid version message in mw2 1.0.159, which version should I have to use your "Coop" files??
Woo hoo i got the Lan version, only problem is that for example you need 8 players to play Search and destroy.

This game in lan was awsome, south africa data lines suck big time, so playing on lan was a great experience.

Do you need internet connection to use this method?? Or can a crossover cable be used to hook up two computers

I did all of the instructions in order to play MW2 2player ops and after all of the file replacements my iw4sp.exe doesn't run. Nothing happens... Any idea what might be the problem here? I'm using tunngle, I have extracted the co-op folder and the game just dies.
Hmmm. This info is almost a year old. I'm not sure if this still works because of a years worth of updates and it uses steam. You could always play real multiplayer by checking out my other hubs. I will look into the problem and let you know if there is an update you can try.
Weird, because my friend did exactly as I did and his game runs. He can run the 2player special ops and even host. My game however, doesn't want to start the single player. (multiplayer works fine, just the sp doesn't even run)
If you use a router, you need to forward port 11155 for tunngle.
If you don't have a router, or you opened port 11155 already then I don't know, but if your friends works, chances are something went wrong on your pc.
can I play in LAN with my friends in MW2, do you know a cracked version of the game which supports LAN play, I don't care about multiplayer since I can't stand those campers and aimbots :( just want to play with my friends???

For this guide Yes. However in theory it is possible to use this without tunngle if you have 2 pc's in the same building connected to each other, but I am unable to test it because I only have one gaming PC.

in theory yes it could work, but I have not tested it.
No there is no virus, it must be a false positive try scanning it with virustotal, I did not make those files they are just repackaged from the teknogods forum because it requires registration to download from there.

I could link to my LAN PCs with Internet,
one of my LAN PCs as a server
one as a Client
but when I press F12,
it wants me to login "Steam" :-\
when I went to the Two players mode of Special Ops,
it always remind me "Must have Two Players to start this mission" :-(
I just could not see the picture that you showed in this blog.
with steam or without steam, both the same.
Steam must be running in the background for this method to work.

1) Do you need TWO Steam accounts in order to play on LAN (I am planning to install it on my secondary PC as well)

3) Can you play ANY Maps with this method? I mean can one PC act as a SERVER and the other on as CLIENT (typical id software DOOM style LAN play that is), or is it just for a CO-OP?

Ok... Yes you need a dummy steam account.
This guide uses tunngle and the internet to make a virtual LAN, this method is only tested using tunngle as a LAN client, but you could hook up 2 PC's with ethernet cable and try that.
This method is for Co-Op special ops objectives.
If you play around with it im sure you could get it working

yes you can play mw1 and world at war using cracked servers to play multiplayer, do a quick search

To play CoOp, do you need two copies of MW2 or just the one?
I have a hack so CoOp being online isn't going to happen.
Is /this/ a way to get around it? (for either a hack or one copy)

ok i did every step u said and i opened TCSB but when i try to host a game the game did not load and i got a fatal error "steam must be running to play this game"
Before doing the steps u mentioned the game was loading normally and i was able to play spec ops single player but now the game is not even loading. can't i download a no steam crack?
This guide is for previous versions that need steam to be running in the background. most torrent clients on the net today do not need steam. Check the teknogods forum for updates and info. Or check my other hubs and find the guide to play normal multiplayer using alteriwnet

The way to play LAN without steam or other programs:
you look up your IP address.
start mw2, press windows logo to go back to windows where you will see the IW window with all the mw2 data.
you will see you can enter text, so you enter:
connect localhost
or
connect (ip address of the host)
go back to mw2 and you will be connected and you can have private matches or go online together with 2 or more pc's.
its actually very simple but nobody seems to know this... (LOL)
and btw, this works for hacked games too ;-)

When i try and run modern warfare2 single player and multiplayer, i get an error message that "steam must be running to play this game".
Can anyone help?
Ppl can some1 help me...I play CoD MW2 and i have lag spikes and ping problem but i havent had it with cod4 mw...Any1 knows why????
and it is simple!
Just like you would connect in tunngle(either using the co-op starter or just right click the teknogod executable shortcut[on desktop], go to properties, add (space)--ip=(host computer's ipv4 address) at the end of the 'target' info)
but put the hosting computers ipv4 address obtained from 'ipconfig'(of host computer) EX: 192.168.1.100 ....so with the short cut it would be
("D:\Intalled Games\Modern Warfare 2\TeknoGods_MW2SP.exe"[ --ip=192.168.1.100]) with the part in brackets added to the target parameters.
then start host, choose game, start shortcut on other computer, press f12(sometimes 2x)...good luck and have fun, I know I am!
